Giorgio Armani said of bold fashion that, “it always depends on how it's done - it mustn't be overtly exhibitionist.” Armani makes a good point, here – emphasizing that any look can be worn beautifully, no matter how brash or understated, depending on: how it’s done. The Milanese have clearly taken these words to heart, boasting innovative fashion that toes the line of the over the top but never surpasses it. It’s a difficult balance to strike and one that is best negotiated through matching classic pieces with unconventional accents. In this gallery, the subjects have managed just that. A short lavender dress, so easily worn on any occasion, is supplemented with a cropped grey jacket and playful bag that resembles a 1960’s radio. Loafers and oxfords are commonly worn by the men and connote the stiff upper crust of the 1900’s. However, in Milan they are immediately made casual by the subtraction of socks. Refocusing onto women’s footwear, it seems like the more leather that can be wrapped around toes and ankles in Milan, the better. Strappy sandals and heels are the cornerstone of summer footwear. This trend runs the risk of too closely referencing a gladiator (or in extreme circumstances even a dominatrix) but when paired with classic silhouettes, as is done in this gallery, it becomes cool and clean. In Milan, exhibitionists are quieted by the sensibility of good Italian fashion – because it all depends on how it’s done, and here it is done right. Written by Caitlin Clarke
As we know from our past galleries in Milan, the city has a tendency toward elegance and fastidious high fashion ensembles no matter what the occasion. This Gallery from around the Piazza Del Duomo brings us to the heart of the city to show us a more casual side of Milan. Here we see the international crowd that converges on the city offering their own takes on how to dress in the summer heat. These men and women give us ways to don shorts and sandals as only Italy could yield, and there is still the famous Milanese fashion hold out who know matter what the situation, leaves the house buttoned up and accessorized from head to toe. And to top it all off, Milano would never be found in the sun without all of those interesting styles of sunglasses!
